THE HIGHLANDERS MUSEUM / THE HIGHLANDERS AND JACOBITE TOUR

Fort George, Ardersier, Inverness, IV2 7TD
Admission to the Museum is free. Admission to the Fort is charged from £10.00 to £34.00.

Located within the mighty bastion of Fort George, just a few miles from Inverness, the Highlanders Museum houses a stunning collection of artefacts and tells a breathtaking story. Amidst the array of medals, cannons, paintings, statues, and soldiers' personal effects lies the fascinating tale of the Cameron Highlanders, Seaforth Highlanders, Queen’s Own Highlanders, and Lovat Scouts.

Within you learn the story of these incredible fighting men of the Highland regiments and their unbreakable spirit. Born in the aftermath of the last Jacobite uprising of 1745 and the famous Battle of Culloden, the Highland regiments of the British Army were formed under a shadow of mistrust and cultural oppression of the Highland people. Yet, as you will see the Highlanders overcame this to establish themselves as some of Britain’s best soldiers.

Follow the Camerons and Seaforth Highlanders from the early days of the Napoleonic Wars to the heights of the British Empire and see how, in places such as India and Africa, the once-oppressed Highlanders were often the oppressors themselves.

Learn how in WW1 and WW2, Scots, English, Welsh, and Irish all donned the kilt and fought together as “Highlanders” to spearhead Britain and her Allies to victory in the two most devastating conflicts the world has ever known.

Above all else, get to know the Highland soldiers as the humans they were, sinners, heroes, conquers, liberators, poets, fathers, sons, Highlanders.

In addition, book a Highlanders and Jacobite Tour, a thrilling 1-day minibus tour, where you adventure in the homeland of the Highland regiments. Cruise down the glorious Loch Ness, walk the field of Culloden, and witness the stunning mountains of the Highlands among the many other memories you will form. Perfect for family days out or those with Scottish heritage who wish to see the very best Scotland has to offer.

We got picked up at Inverness train station on our very first day in Highlands. We were greeted by our driver and guide. Both born and raised in highland. We felt warm welcomed especially this was our very first trip to Scotland. Dad couldn't get his eye off from the nature beauty, the cow (yes, the cow), the lake. I got to try on opening the water gate of the canal. We spent a good amount time in the Highlanders museum, which full of history and lots of display to see. Off course, much needed hot chocolate.
We went to the Clava Cairns and Culloden battlefield in the afternoon before returning. I was amazed to learn the ancient settlement and the Jacobite history.
If you are first timer,I definitely recommend this tour. it covers all highlights around Inverness and could not be missed.

This is an excellent and very substantial museum. We left some of it for a second visit, and enjoyed both visits very much. It set us off on further research after leaving.

We spent some time looking at pictures of various regimental leaders, and left with the suggestion that some kind of guide to honours would be beneficial for people like ourselves, who felt bewildered by, but interested in, all the letters after their names. We felt the same applied to the amazing display of medals. Some simple guide to the meaning of at least the most common would have added to our visit.

Excellent museum in an epic fortress. I had no idea the rich history of the highlanders. With exhibits of real military artefacts used by the regiments dating from Waterloo to modern day Afghanistan wars. Amazing. 10/10
