The castle's rich history includes a notable event during the English Civil War when it was besieged by General Sir Thomas Fairfax. The siege concluded after a fortunate shot severed the drawbridge chain, leading to the castle's capture—the only instance it experienced battle.
Today, visitors can explore the castle's romantic ruins and beautifully maintained walled gardens, which are open to the public from Easter Sunday to the end of October.
